Vital Neuro vs BrainTap: Neurofeedback or Brainwave Entrainment?
BrainTap and Vital Neuro both use sound to change how you feel. The difference is whether the session is listening to you while it plays.
Two Different Mechanisms, Often Confused
People shopping for a brain training device usually find both of these and assume they are competing versions of the same thing. They are not. They work in opposite directions, and knowing which direction you want makes the choice straightforward.
BrainTap: Brainwave Entrainment
BrainTap is a light-and-sound headset. An LED visor delivers light pulses while the audio layers guided meditation and visualization with tones at chosen frequencies. BrainTap describes the approach as brainwave entrainment — the principle that the brain tends to fall in step with a steady external rhythm.
The session is a produced recording. You choose a programme, put the headset on, and it plays. The same session plays the same way for everyone, every time.
Vital Neuro: Closed-Loop Neurofeedback
Vital Neuro is a pair of headphones with five dry EEG sensors built in — three along the headband and two in the ear cups. They read your brain activity 250 times per second, and the music changes in response to what your brain is actually doing in that moment.
There is no fixed program. The audio is generated against your brain in real time, so no two sessions are identical, and neither are two people's.
Why the Direction of the Loop Matters
Entrainment is open-loop. Information flows one way: the device produces a rhythm and your brain is invited to follow it. Nothing checks whether it did.
Neurofeedback is closed-loop. The device reads, responds, and reads again. That loop is what makes it neurofeedback rather than stimulation, and it is the same principle used in clinical neurofeedback practice: the brain produces a pattern, the pattern is rewarded, and over repetitions the brain gets better at producing it on purpose. Learning requires feedback, and feedback requires measurement.
That is the honest crux of it. One approach guides. The other responds.
What That Feels Like in Practice
Personalization
With a recorded session, personalization means picking a different track. With neurofeedback, the session personalizes itself while you are in it — including on the days when your brain turns up tired, distracted, or wired.
What You Wear
BrainTap uses a visor over the eyes together with headphones, so sessions are done sitting or lying down with your eyes closed. Vital Neuro puts its five sensors inside the headphones themselves — three in the headband, two in the ear cups — so a session can happen anywhere you would normally wear headphones.
What You Are Asked to Do
BrainTap sessions are guided — there is a voice taking you through a visualization. Vital Neuro sessions have no narration. You pick a mode, the music adapts, and there is nothing to follow or interpret.
Range of Goals
Both offer libraries aimed at different outcomes. Vital Neuro organizes these as five modes with distinct neurofeedback protocols — Focus, Relax, Sleep, Meditate and Optimize — each targeting a different brain state rather than a different piece of content.
Side by Side
| Vital Neuro | BrainTap | |
|---|---|---|
| Method | Closed-loop EEG neurofeedback | Light and sound brainwave entrainment |
| Reads your brain? | Yes — five dry EEG sensors, 250 readings per second | No — the headset delivers stimulation |
| Session content | Generated in real time from your brain | Pre-recorded guided programs |
| Form factor | Headphones | LED visor plus headphones |
| Eyes | Open or closed, screen-free | Closed, under the visor |
| Narration | None — adaptive music only | Guided meditation and visualization |
| Where you can use it | Anywhere you wear headphones | Seated or lying down |
Which One Suits You
If you want a guided, immersive experience with a voice walking you through it, and you like the idea of setting aside dedicated time with your eyes closed, an entrainment headset is a reasonable fit and a simpler piece of technology.
If you want the session itself to respond to your brain — and you want brain training to fit into a working day rather than require one — that is what closed-loop neurofeedback is for, and it is why Vital Neuro is built into headphones rather than a visor.
They are not mutually exclusive. Plenty of people use guided meditation alongside neurofeedback. But if you are deciding where to put your money first, the question worth answering is simple: do you want a session that plays, or a session that listens?
